Privacy: understand your threat model

Latency to the closest server sat in the high teens to low 20s (ms). These numbers line up with what independent testers like PCMag and Comparitech have reported in their 2025/early-2026 rounds, so I’m comfortable with them — but note that a 1 Gbps line is an unrealistic baseline for most readers. On a 300 Mbps cable line I saw essentially no meaningful overhead from the VPN, which is the more relevant real-world result.

4K IPTV streams (roughly 25 Mbps sustained) played without visible rebuffering across multiple sessions. On OpenVPN, throughput dropped by roughly a third — worth knowing if you’re forced off WireGuard for any reason.

If you just want a VPN, this bloat is annoying and occasionally introduces its own bugs. I had the Windows client eat roughly 400 MB of RAM in the background, which on a streaming box is more than I’d like.

Also: split tunneling on macOS still isn’t supported. For a flagship product in 2026, that’s a legitimate gap. Mac users who want to route only IPTV traffic through the VPN have to go router-level.

Lightway (Express’s in-house protocol, now based on wolfSSL rather than their older TLS-based implementation) was consistently a few percent behind NordLynx on the fiber line but — interestingly — more stable on long sessions. Where Nord’s throughput would occasionally dip 20% for a minute before recovering, Express’s line was flatter. For multi-hour streams that matters more than peak numbers.

The good parts

  • Jurisdiction: British Virgin Islands. No mandatory retention, no MLAT obligations with the US/UK that would compel handing over user data. Better than most.
  • TrustedServer architecture (RAM-only), independently audited by PwC and Cure53.
  • Lightway is open source and the audit history is genuinely strong — KPMG and Cure53 have both reviewed the codebase.
  • Split tunneling on Windows, macOS, Android, and routers. This is one of the few providers that ships it consistently across platforms.

The honest weakness

Ownership. ExpressVPN was acquired by Kape Technologies in 2021 for $936 million. Kape also owns CyberGhost, Private Internet Access, and ZenMate, and its earlier corporate identity (Crossrider) had a documented history in the adware space. Express has operated independently and there’s no public evidence of data mishandling post-acquisition, but if your threat model includes “I don’t want my VPN provider’s parent company to have any history I find distasteful,” this is a factor. I still rank Express highly because the technical execution is genuinely strong, but you should know who you’re paying.

Also: it’s expensive. Depending on the promotion, you’re looking at roughly $8–9/month on a 12-month plan versus Nord’s $3–4. That premium is real and it’s not fully justified by performance alone.

3. Surfshark — Best Value, Real Tradeoffs

Speeds

Surfshark runs WireGuard and on the fiber line I typically saw somewhere in the 220–260 Mbps range to nearby servers — a visible step down from Nord and Express but still more than enough for 4K. Transatlantic performance was more variable; one evening I hit under 90 Mbps to a US East server that the app had auto-recommended, and switching manually to a different city fixed it. The auto-connect logic is not great.

What’s good

  • Unlimited simultaneous connections. This is the actual reason to pick Surfshark. If you’re running a smart TV, two phones, a laptop, a tablet, an Apple TV, and a partner’s devices, you’re not overage-limited. For households, this is the value story.
  • Jurisdiction: Netherlands (moved from BVI in 2021). The Netherlands is inside the Nine Eyes alliance. This is a real downgrade compared to Nord (Panama) or Express (BVI), and Surfshark doesn’t talk about it much. Worth weighing.

4. Proton VPN — The Privacy Pick, Slower in Practice

Speeds

Proton is the slowest of the five. On the fiber line I typically saw 160–220 Mbps on WireGuard to nearby servers and noticeably less on more distant routes. For 1080p IPTV this is fine. For 4K at peak hours on a long stream, I hit brief buffering twice during testing when the server I’d picked was apparently under load. If 4K is non-negotiable, this isn’t your first pick.

What’s actually strong

  • Jurisdiction: Switzerland. Swiss law is genuinely favorable for privacy — no mandatory retention for VPN providers, no compelled logging of targets without a serious criminal case, and no Five/Nine/Fourteen Eyes membership. This is the best jurisdiction on the list.
  • Open-source apps on every platform, independently audited. This is rare and genuinely meaningful — you can read the client code.
  • Secure Core routes traffic through Proton-owned servers in Iceland, Switzerland, or Sweden before exiting elsewhere. It’s multi-hop done properly, with the first hop under the provider’s direct physical control. It cuts throughput roughly in half, so again: privacy tool, not streaming tool.
  • Warrant canary — though I’ll note that warrant canaries have never been tested in court, and their legal enforceability is essentially theoretical. Treat them as a symbolic gesture, not a real protection.
  • A usable free tier with no bandwidth cap, which is almost unheard of. Speeds on the free tier are throttled and streaming is blocked, but it’s a legitimate way to try the service.

The honest weakness

Speed, as above. Also, the server count is smaller (roughly 2,900 per Proton’s own disclosures) and IPTV unblocking is hit-or-miss — BBC iPlayer worked consistently on UK servers, but a Canal+ stream I was testing kept failing until I moved to a second Paris server. 5. CyberGhost — Friendly, but the Weakest of the Five

I’m going to be direct: CyberGhost is the one I’d recommend last, and I want to explain why rather than dress it up.

Speeds

Throughput was inconsistent. On some European servers I got reasonable numbers in the 180–230 Mbps range; on others the same evening, I was under 100 Mbps with no obvious explanation. CyberGhost advertises “streaming-optimized” servers with platform labels (“for Netflix UK”, “for BBC iPlayer”), and some of those worked fine, but others were blocked at the time of testing — the cat-and-mouse problem is particularly visible here.

What’s fine

  • Apps are genuinely beginner-friendly. The Windows and Android clients are clean and obvious in a way Nord’s aren’t anymore.
  • Very large server count (publicly claimed around 11,500, though I’d treat that number skeptically — server counts are a notoriously inflated marketing metric).
  • 45-day money-back guarantee, which is longer than the industry-standard 30 days.
  • Jurisdiction: Romania. Outside Five/Nine/Fourteen Eyes, reasonable privacy laws.

The honest weaknesses — and there’s more than one

  1. Ownership. Same parent company as ExpressVPN (Kape/Crossrider). I mentioned this under Express too, but it matters more here because CyberGhost’s technical execution doesn’t earn the same benefit of the doubt.
  2. No recent independent no-logs audit that I could find. Nord, Express, Surfshark, and Proton all have published audits from Big Four or reputable security firms within the last few years. CyberGhost publishes quarterly transparency reports, which are useful, but they’re not the same as an auditor reviewing the infrastructure.
  3. Inconsistent throughput across their own server fleet, including on the “streaming-optimized” servers that are meant to be the selling point.
  4. Split tunneling is Windows and Android only. macOS and iOS users don’t get it.

If you’re a total beginner and value the hand-holding, CyberGhost is usable. For anyone who cares about the things a VPN is actually supposed to do well, one of the other four is a better pick.

Setting Up a VPN for IPTV

Router-level is usually the right answer

For IPTV specifically, installing the VPN on your router is the approach I’d recommend. Smart TVs, Apple TV, Fire TV, and most streaming boxes either don’t support VPN apps at all or support them in a degraded form. Router-level protection covers everything on the network, avoids per-device setup, and means your kill switch actually works for the TV.

The caveat: your router CPU is now doing the encryption. A consumer router with a weak SoC will bottleneck your stream long before your internet connection does. During testing the GL.iNet GL-MT6000 (a MediaTek Filogic 830 platform) handled WireGuard at close to gigabit speeds without breaking a sweat. An older router with an ARMv7 single-core will struggle to hit 100 Mbps on OpenVPN and possibly half that on WireGuard.

Hardware I tested on:

  • GL.iNet GL-MT6000 — Purpose-built for VPN workloads, ships with WireGuard and OpenVPN support out of the box, OpenWrt underneath if you want to tinker. This was my main test rig and it handled everything I threw at it.
  • Netgear Nighthawk R7000 — An older but well-supported model with strong DD-WRT/OpenWrt community builds. VPN throughput is limited by the 1 GHz dual-core Broadcom — expect to max out around 50–80 Mbps on OpenVPN. Fine for 1080p, tight for 4K.
  • TP-Link AX5400 — WiFi 6, OpenWrt compatible on supported hardware revisions (check before buying — TP-Link sometimes swaps chipsets mid-model). Reasonable middle-ground option.

Per-device setup

Install the VPN’s native app, pick a server geographically close to you unless you need a specific location for unblocking, and enable the kill switch. Verify the kill switch actually works by starting a stream, then killing the VPN process from Task Manager / Activity Monitor. If traffic keeps flowing, your kill switch isn’t configured correctly.

SmartDNS for devices that won’t cooperate

Most premium VPNs include a SmartDNS service (Nord’s is called “SmartPlay”, Express’s is “MediaStreamer”). These let you unblock geo-restricted content on devices that can’t run a VPN app, but they do not encrypt your traffic and they do not hide your IP. They’re a geo-unblocking convenience, not a privacy tool. Don’t confuse them.

Rough guidance, accounting for VPN overhead in the 10–25% range depending on protocol and server distance:

  • SD (480p): 4–5 Mbps
  • HD (720p/1080p): 10–15 Mbps
  • 4K (2160p): 30–45 Mbps
  • Multiple simultaneous 4K streams: add roughly 30 Mbps per stream

WireGuard overhead is typically around 10%, OpenVPN closer to 20–30%. If you’re on a 50 Mbps connection and trying to watch 4K, you’re already at the edge; adding OpenVPN encryption may push you over.

Protocol Picking, Quickly

  • WireGuard (or NordLynx, or Lightway — which is WireGuard-adjacent but not identical). Use this by default. It’s faster, uses less power on mobile, and the crypto is modern. The only reason to not use it is if a specific network is blocking it.
  • OpenVPN (UDP) — Slower and older, but battle-tested and more evasive on hostile networks. Use it if WireGuard is blocked or if you’re using obfuscation.
  • IKEv2/IPsec — Decent on mobile because it handles network switches gracefully (cell to WiFi). Not my first pick for streaming, but fine as a fallback on iOS where WireGuard battery impact sometimes bothers people.

The Things Articles Like This Usually Lie About

A few honest calibrations:

  • “Works in China” — I did not test from China and neither did most people writing about it. If that’s your use case, look at Great Firewall-specific guides dated within the last month, not general review articles.
  • “Unblocks Netflix everywhere” — Netflix’s VPN detection is ongoing and the list of working servers changes weekly. Any review claiming a static answer is out of date before it’s published.
  • “Military-grade encryption” — AES-256-GCM (what all these providers use for OpenVPN) and ChaCha20-Poly1305 (WireGuard) are strong ciphers. “Military-grade” is a marketing phrase with no technical meaning.
  • Warrant canaries — Nice in theory. Legal enforceability is essentially untested and most security lawyers consider them symbolic.
  • Jurisdiction vs server location — Your VPN’s legal jurisdiction determines who can compel them with a court order. Where the physical server sits determines who can seize the hardware. These are different questions. A Panama-based VPN with a server in Germany is still subject to German authorities physically showing up to that data center.

Using a VPN is legal in almost every country you’re likely to be reading this from. Using a VPN to stream content you haven’t paid for is not, regardless of the tunnel. I’m assuming you’re using these tools with legitimate IPTV services — Sling, YouTube TV, Hulu Live, fuboTV, BBC iPlayer for residents with a TV license, and so on. If you’re doing something else, the law is the law, and a VPN is not a legal shield.
